Description

Looking for a bike to fill that unexplainable gap in your stable? You probably don’t need another gravel bike. Honestly, you don’t need a Boom Boat either.. However, they say the day we stop playing is the day we start dying. So technically, the Boom Boat might just be a life-support system.. you know, in case you were looking for some justification.

The Boom Boat is my take on a commuter BMX: Ride it to the train, to the grocery store, to the skatepark, or through a mid-life crisis (and maybe even solve one). Perfect for retired BMXers, or those who never became one! Anyone looking for small wheels and big smiles, really.

I’ve designed the Boom Boat around the ridiculous and wonderful 20+ platform (20 x 2.8″). It’s a tiny, plush, jib-happy wheelsize that gracefully straddles practicality and playfulness. Oh yeah, did I mention they’re super strong!

Low center of gravity: Perfect for racks, baskets, or anything else you want to haul.
Short overall length: Nimble enough for trains, buses, elevators, and apartments.
Massive tire clearance: Grip, float, and soak up bumps. Quick to spin up, easy to accelerate, very fun.
Drive train options: Versatile stainless steel rocker dropouts for gears or single-speed (or fixed!)

Whether you want a minimalist singlespeed build, a practical basket bike, or just something to bounce around skateparks and alleyways, the Boom Boat is ready to mash. It’s a little workhorse, a city toy, a light tourer, and a grin machine. Basically, the most fun bike I could think of.

Between sizes?

– Choose the smaller size if you want more fun, aggressive handling, and more dropper post to play with.

– Choose the bigger size if you want a little more room for bags, racks, and sweepy bars.

Build tips

– Tires
The Boom Boat is designed around plus-sized 20 x 2.8″ tires. The geometry, clearances, and ride feel are all optimized for these fat little tires. I’ve got two options available: a knobby (Vee Tire Crown Gem), and a slick (Schwalbe Super Moto)! Get the knobbys if you’ll be riding it primarily off-road or just want that tractor vibe, or run the slicks for more urban use. My personal preference is the tire mullet, knobby in the front and slick in the back. This provides good grip for braking and cornering in loose stuff up front, while keeping rolling resistance as low as possible in the rear, where all your weight is.

– Dropper post
This bike NEEDS a dropper post. I mean, a normal seatpost will work.. i understand a dropper post is also an investment. However, even if you don’t plan on doing tricks, you will not regret it one bit. It’s incredibly handy to be able to get the seat out of the way at any time, and then revert back to the perfect pedalling saddle height whenever you want.

Check out the OneUp V3 dropper and use the pictures/drawings in the gallery above to determine which length you need.

– Rear Dreailleur Compatibility
If you want to run a derailleur, it must be a SHORT CAGE derailleur. Medium and long cage derailleurs end up getting too close to the tire and ground, potentially causing the chain or cage to rub the tire, especially while in the largest cog. Here are a few options and some comments.

Sram GX 10 Speed Short Cage: This is the best option in my opinion. The lovely sram click feeling, super tight cage tension to reduce chainslap, and very precise shifting. Works great with an 11-36t cassette. Not overly expensive!

– Shimano Zee or Saint 10 Speed: Zee might be discontinued, and Saint is pretty pricey, but also really nice! Super crisp shifting and a strong cage clutch, also works great with 11-36t cassettes.

– MicroShift Acolyte Super Short Cage: Great value for money 8 8-speed drivetrain with a decently strong cage spring, and compatible with their own 11-38t cassette.

– Shimano Cues Short Cage: Really cannot recommend it.. sluggish shifting, bulky derailleur, potential clearance issues, pretty long cage, low spring tension, lots of chainslap.

I’m sure there are more options out there that might work, 7-speed downhill drive trains, Boost internal gear hubs like Rohloff probably work (you gotta figure it out yourself), and singlespeed of course!

– Wheels
Boost 20″ wheelsets aren’t exactly available at your local supermarket, but I’m sure a local shop or wheel builder would be more than happy to help out! Check out Munro Wheels if you’re in the EU. He’s also the official EU Velocity Distributor!

– Rims
Ideally, something around 45mm wide to accommodate the nice and wide 2.8″ tires. Velocity Duallys now come in 20″! BMX rims are also great, although they’re often 36H. Wheel builders can also help with that. If you’re looking for 36H hubs, let me know, I can source some from HOPE or even a dynamo from SON.

I’m also currently working on my own 20+ and 26+ rim design. It takes time, but I’m hoping they’ll be ready in time for the frames to arrive. Maybe even complete wheels made in Taiwan. Patience is a virtue.

Is this a BMX?

Although the Boom Boat is tough as nails, it’s not made for dedicated BMX use/abuse. It spans the gap between a daily commuter and a playful jib bike.
